SWACA was founded in 1975 by a group of women who lived in the Crosby and Waterloo areas of Sefton.
The original aim was to provide refuge for women and children who were escaping domestic abuse. This was finally achieved in the early 1980s, in partnership with Crosby Housing Association (a partnership which still exists today).
Over time, the needs of women and their families have changed and SWACA has responded to these changing needs. The Agency has always recognised that the issue of domestic abuse cannot be the sole responsibility of any one agency, and so over the years, have committed to enabling and facilitating multi-agency partnerships and initiatives. This approach, together with amendments to legislation have made it possible for many families to remain in their own homes without fear. Consequently, as these services developed, the need for refuge accommodation has diminished.
SWACA continues to develop appropriate and accessible services for women, children and young people and are proactive in encouraging all partner agencies to establish effective early intervention and preventative services.
The organisation is an independent Charity (Registered Charity No: 1066878) and a Company Limited by Guarantee (Company Registration No: 3448301). The voluntary Board of Trustees (who are also Directors) are responsible for the governance of the Charity. SWACA is monitored by its funding bodies as well as by the Charity Commission and Companies House. As an independent Charity, it is responsible for raising adequate funds to provide services and for ensuring that all legislative requirements are met.
