Kids Aloud
The KIDS A LOUD
group was established as a direct result of the consultation entitled ‘What
we think’ which was conducted by SWACA between December 2001 and March
2002.
The original
consultation involved 20 children who each received support services from
SWACA. The aim of the consultation
was to gather their views of the services provided by SWACA for the
children and the services provided by other support agencies for children
living with/experiencing domestic violence and abuse.
The KIDS A
LOUD group has two key aims:
- TO ASSIST IN IMPROVING ALL SERVICES FOR
CHILDREN EXPERIENCING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ABUSE.
- TO GIVE CHILDREN A VOICE IN ALL PROCESSES.
The group members
meet monthly and have drawn up a list of ideas aimed at achieving their key
aims.
To date some of the
groups activities include:
- Meeting with Sefton
domestic Violence Steering Group and formalising links with them. The group are also currently
designing a leaflet, on behalf of the steering group, to be
disseminated to all children throughout Sefton.
- Designing a leaflet for use within SWACA,
explaining the Children’s Services and the KIDS A LOUD group.
- Hosting ‘Question and Answer’ sessions with
representatives from Merseyside Police and Sefton
Children, Schools and Families.
- Meeting with an adult survivor of domestic
violence to ensure that the message they want heard includes the adult
perspective.
- Meeting with representatives of the
judiciary to explore children’s feelings in relation to the issue of
contact.
- Participation in several radio broadcasts
including the B.B.C. Radio 4 ‘P.M.’ programme.
- The group are currently developing the idea
of setting up a borough wide helpline for other children who
experience domestic violence.
