Defining Domestic Abuse
Domestic Violence is physical, sexual, psychological, social or financial violence that takes place within an intimate relationship that is part of a pattern of controlling behaviour. Many definitions of Domestic Violence or Domestic Abuse can be found in relation to specific agencies and are usually stated on the appropriate web site.
In Sefton, we recognise that Domestic Abuse can threaten the lives of women, children and young people and certainly have a long-term impact on many survivors. SWACA provides services only to women, children and young people but recognises that men can become victims of abuse but usually require a different response.
Abusers and victims come from all different walks of life. Domestic Abuse has no respect for class, age, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, disability or lifestyle.
The impact of Domestic Abuse is complex and as an agency we would recommend that anyone wishing to learn more about this issue should attend appropriate training or alternatively access the National Women's Aid website on www.womensaid.org.uk where many questions are answered.
Many victims of Domestic abuse can be pursued for years by ex-partners and it is important that all agencies recognise that the victim or survivor cannot necessarily protect themselves by separating from a violent partner. This demands determination and co-operation between agencies to deal affectively with the perpetrator, whilst providing safe, appropriate support for the victim.
Two women a week are killed by their partners or former partners. It, therefore, remains a priority to strive towards reducing this risk.
No-one deserves to be a victim of such abuse although many often feel responsible. Any intervention to address Domestic abuse should always hold the perpetrator accountable.
